Abstract

1536971 Turbulence chambers in I C engine cylinders M G MAY 13 Feb 1976 05787/76 Heading F1B A 4-stroke spark-ignited I.C. engine has, in its cylinder head, a swirl chamber 21 in which is mounted an exhaust valve 17, the chamber being provided with an eccentric inlet duct 26 arranged to provide uni-directional vortexial flow of mixture within the chamber (see arrow B) towards the end of the engine compression stroke. A spark-plug 27 is mounted in the chamber 21. To promote anti-clockwise rotation of the charge as it enters through inlet valve 14, the inlet passage 15 may be tangential to the cylinder longitudinal axis, as may be the exhaust passage 19 extending in the opposite direction to inlet passage 15 to improve scavenging. The piston may be flat-crowned or slightly arced and the inlet duct 26 may be formed either in the cylinder head or wholly or partially in the piston crown (not shown). The chamber 21 may also extend partially into the piston crown (not shown). In Fig. 6, the inlet and exhaust passages 15, 19 extend in the same direction, the chamber 21 is oval, and the inlet valve 14 is also formed in a shallow recess 31 in the cylinder head, with the duct 26 extending between the recess 31 and chamber 21 to induce a mixture flow as indicated by arrows C, D and E towards the end of a compression stroke. The igniter 27' is located in the chamber 21 as far downstream with respect to this flow as is possible and a further duct or ducts 70 may be formed to reinforce the vortexial flow (see arrow H). A further inlet valve 34 may debouch into the chamber 21, for the introduction of rich mixture, in which case inlet valve 14 may introduce only air into the engine. In both embodiments the duct 26 may be subdivided into several parallel ducts (not shown).
