Abstract

An internal combustion piston engine having a main combustion chamber 13, a pre-combustion chamber 17 provided with spark ignition means 24 and divided into a primary cavity 18 and a secondary cavity 20 communicating via at least one opening 2, a main intake passage 16 for supplying a lean air- fuel mixture to said main combustion chamber, an auxiliary intake passage 23 for supplying a relatively richer air-fuel mixture to said primary cavity of the pre-combustion chamber, at least one primary flame passage 29 extending from said primary cavity to said main combustion chamber and arranged to direct a flame towards the central region of said main combustion chamber, and at least one, shorter, secondary flame passage 31 extending from said secondary cavity to said main combustion chamber and arranged to direct a flame towards a peripheral region of said main combustion chamber. Embodiments are described in which there is a single primary flame passage and two or three secondary passages; or two primary flame passages and two secondary passages. <IMAGE>
