Abstract

A supply line 8, Fig. 1, having been disconnected from the supply by the tripping of an earth leakage breaker 3, 5, 6, is tested by a unit 10 which firstly applies a d. c. test voltage between earth and one of the conductors 8 so that because of the load 1 all of the conductors 8 are charged to the level of the d. c. voltage, and secondly, after sufficient time has elapsed for the charging to be complete, measures the current then flowing (which will, of course, be leakage current to earth) and if it is too large gives an indication of this fact and locks open the contactor 3 so that the line 8 cannot be reconnected to the supply. <IMAGE>
