Abstract

848,444. Protective cut-out arrangements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 27, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9605/56. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXV] A rectifier protective arrangement includes circuit elements forming a current path preferentially responsive to A.C. potentials of supply frequency between a point at earth potential and a point connected with a D.C. output terminal of the rectifier installation. The rectifier 15 may be a mechanical or contact rectifier and may supply an electro-chemical plant 10 through bus-bars 11, 12. The current path includes an inductor 22 and a capacitor 23 forming a series-resonant circuit in series with a bridge rectifier 25 which supplies a low-set alarm relay 26 and a higher-set circuit-breaker tripping relay 27. This protective arrangement may be tested by a test-circuit which includes an A.C. supply source 33, a test switch 38, a capacitor 34 and an inductor 35. One such protective and test arrangement is connected between the positive bus-bar 11 and an earth bus-bar 24 and another such arrangement is connected between the negative and earth bus-bars so that the existance of an A.C. potential supply frequency to earth on either the negative or positive busbar causes an alarm to be given and the circuitbreaker 16 to be tripped if the A.C. potential is of sufficient magnitude. The provision of an ammeter 39 and a voltmeter 40 enables the leakage resistance to earth to be calculated when the test circuit is used, the test circuit applying an A.C. potential between the appropriate supply bus-bar and the earth bus-bar.
