Abstract
A spring-applied fluid pressure released brake actuator has a piston rim stop 17 for resisting spring hold- off pressure in a chamber 34 and a wind-off stop 72 arranged to prevent movement of the piston 12 by a wind- off mechanism, into contact with its rim stop thereby minimising the bending stress applied to the end cover 16 of the actuators. The wind- off mechanism is formed by a bolt 40 screwed into a nut 70 carried by the cover 16, a flange 74 on the bolt being arranged to engage a shoulder 76 on the piston during wind-off. Stop 72 engages nut 17 before the piston strikes the rim stop 17. Actuators with differing wind-off mechanism and stop arrangements are also described. <IMAGE>
