Abstract

In a spring brake actuator a piston (2) is arranged to be acted upon by spring (7) to apply a tension output force to a brake rod or cable linkage (13) via a trunk (12) extending through one end of the actuator, the other end wall (14) of the actuator and the piston forming a pressure chamber with a port 15. A mechanically operable release mechanism is provided by a sealingly rotatable captive threaded rod (16) which co-operates with a nut 19 keyed in a recess 20 of the piston the nut being abuttable with the bottom (27) of the recess so that nut movement comes piston retraction against the spring force. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Spring force applying tensional force-actuators This invention relates to spring force applying tensional force actuators and relates particularly to actuators for exerting tensional forces.
Spring force applying actuators have already been proposed which exert a tensional force via an output member, the tensional force being controllable by the application of fluid pressure to a pressure responsive member, the action of which opposes the force of the spring. It has also been proposed to provide locking means between the pressure responsive member and an output member the locking means being releasable in order to remove the force of the spring from the output member. Such locking means tend to be relatively complicated and they are also violent in operation and the present invention has an object to provide such an actuator wherein a spring force can be gently relieved by a winding mechanism.
According to the present invention there is provided a spring force applying tensional force actuator including a housing and a pressure responsive member between which and a first wall of the housing a heavy spring is retained, the pressure responsive member and a facing wall of the housing forming opposing walls of a fluid pressure chamber and the pressure responsive member being moveable by a control pressure when applied at a control port of the chamber to counteract the force of the spring, said pressure responsive member having means extending through said facing wail to exert the actuator tensional output force and the actuator also including a sealingly rotatable force opposing member which is captive in the first wall and has a screw threaded inner portion threadedly adjustably engaging a nut member which is abuttable with the pressure responsive member in a direction to oppose the force of the spring the nut being axially slideable in the other direction but located against rotation in a recess of the pressure responsive member over a length at least equal to the normal stroke of the actuator.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will be further described by way of example with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which illustrates a sectional diagrammatic view of an actuator embodying the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1 the spring force-applying actuator shown therein comprises a cylindrical housing 1 and a pressure responsive member in the form of a piston 2 with a piston seal 3, a skirt 4 and a guide packing 5 the piston thereby being sealingly slideable in a bore 6.
Three concentrically arranged springs 7 are retained between the rear surface of the piston 4 and a first wall 8 formed by a closure member 9 for the cylindrical housing. The closure member 9 is retained by an internal circlip 10 and is provided with mounting studs 11 for mounting the actuator as a brake actuator on the frame of a vehicle. This piston 2 has a central trunk 1 2 which extends through the wall 8 and within which a connection is made by any suitable means to a tension rod or cable 1 3. A control pressure chamber is formed between piston 2 and the facing wall 14 of the housing and this chamber is provided with a control pressure port 1 5 as shown for connection to a brake control valve controlling a supply of air under pressure.Captive in this facing wall 14 of the housing where there is provided a rod 1 6 which is provided with a square end 1 7 and an inwardly projecting screw threaded portion 1 8 the thread of which matches an internal thread of a nut 1 9 which is slideably located within a recess 20 of the piston. The threaded rod 16 is further provided with a shoulder 21 which bears against the wall 14, a seal 22 and a retaining external circlip 23. Furthermore, the nut 1 9 is retained against rotational movement by a peg 25 and the inner end of which forms a key member which projects into a longitudinal groove 26 of the nut 1 9.
In the position shown, the inner end 27 of the nut 1 9 is shown just clear of the bottom 28 of the recess but upon rotation of the square end 17, the end 27 abuts the bottom surface 28 of the recess 20 and further rotation results in the force of the springs 1 7 being removed from the output rod or cable 1 3 and transferred via the nut 19, the threaded rod 18 and shoulder 21 thereon to the end face 1 4 of the housing. In normal operation, the nut 1 9 will be screwed back to the position as shown in the drawing and the piston 2 will be spaced somewhat from the end wall 14 such that with no pressure applied to the control port 1 5 the force of the springs 7 is applied directly through the trunk 1 2 as a tensional force to 1 3. Control of the tensional force can be achieved by varying the pressure applied at 1 5 up to a value of which the output force is reduced to zero by the spring forces being completely counteracted.
The force of 1 3 can be alternatively removed by rotation of the square end 1 7 of the release rod 1 9 as referred to above.
1. A spring force applying tensioned force actuator including a housing and a pressure responsive member and a first wall of the housing a heavy spring is retained, the pressure responsive member and a facing wall of the housing forming opposing walls of a fluid pressure chamber and the pressure responsive member being moveable by a control pressure when applied at a control port of the chamber
