Abstract

A process for preparing a carbonaceous starting material for use in producing electrode coke comprises extracting raw coke oven tar with a petrol fraction boiling from 80- 120 DEG C to give an extract of tar components in the solvent and an insoluble soft pitch residue which contains undesirable non- graphitizable contaminants. Solvent is removed from the extract to give a tar suitable for coking to form electrode- grade graphite. <IMAGE>
