Abstract

The cylinder head has valve recesses 5 extending in the axial direction of the cylinder for the inlet and exhaust valves, a plurality of cylinder head base cooling passages 20, 21 which are provided in a plane parallel to the base surface of the cylinder head facing the combustion chamber, a plurality of valve seat cooling passages 10 for cooling the inlet and exhaust valve seats, and feed ducts 23 for feeding the cylinder head base cooling passages and the valve seat cooling passages 10 with coolant. A group of cylinder head base cooling passages 20, 21 is provided to cool each of a plurality of cylinder head base cooling zones, each zone being defined by two radial planes extending from the cylinder axis through the axis of two adjacent valve recesses 5, each group of cylinder head base cooling passages 20, 21 comprising a radially extending inner passage 20 and a plurality of outer passages 21 which converge towards, and communicate with, the inner passage 20 and which are distributed over the radially outer part of the cylinder head base cooling zone associated with the group 20, 21. The invention is particularly suited to engines operating at high combustion temperatures and pressures. <IMAGE>
