Abstract

1479139 Cooling IC engines NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 29500/73 Heading F1B Cooling ducts are confined to locations where they closely surround any of certain parts which are liable to overheat, the parts being the combustion zone of each cylinder, inlets for fuel to the cylinders, valve seats and valve guides, the ducts being connected by passages to a cooling fluid inlet and a cooling fluid outlet, and the remainder of the cylinder block and cylinder head contain no further such ducts and lack conventional cooling spaces formed by casting. An annular cooling water passage 34, Fig. 9, is provided around each cylinder, the depth of the passage being in general less than that of the combustion zone. Adjacent passages 34 may intersect. The cooling water passes from an inlet 24 in the cylinder head 4 to a header 25, Figs. 9 and 10, serving several passages 34 via ports 33. Ports 35 connect the passages 34 to a header 31 connected to an outlet 32. The headers 25, 31 are also connected via ducts 26, 30 to annular passages 27 each surrounding a sleeve 28 at the end of a bore 29 which houses a fuel injection nozzle holder; via ducts 38, 39 to an annular passage 37, Figs. 10, 11, surrounding each exhaust valve seat insert 36; and via ducts 40, 42 to an annular passage 41 surrounding each exhaust valve guide. Strengthening ribs 1,14, Fig. 3, extending vertically on the outside of the cylinder block and integral crank-case, and walls 13 connecting the cylinders are provided and may be disposed in other ways as shown in Fig. 8 (not shown). Horizontal ribs (not shown) inter-connect the vertical ribs 1, 14. The spaces between the ribs may be filled with sound-absorbing material. The cylinder head comprises a plate 17, Fig. 4, surmounted by ribs 18, 19, bosses 20 accommodating the fixing studs.
