Abstract

In a sheet stacking apparatus having axially spaced spirally slotted stacking discs 24 and a sheet stripping plate 30, sheets are conveyed to the stacking discs by a vacuum drum 7 having annular grooves into which the extremities of the stacking discs extend. The stacking wheel is driven at a lower peripheral speed than the drum and in the opposite direction of rotation. The disposition of vacuum ports in the drum is such that a sheet continues to be held on the drum surface by the vacuum until the extremities of the stacking discs 24 in the grooves, by virtue of their lower peripheral speed, act against the vacuum to strip the sheet from the drum 7. The apparatus can be used for stacking flimsy and damaged sheets such as used banknotes. The axis of the stacking wheel 24 may be movable about the axis of the vacuum drum 7 to accommodate different stack thicknesses. Such an arrangement can be used as a variable "buffer" sheet store. <IMAGE>
