Abstract

Separators for alkaline batteries, particularly those having zinc electrodes, comprise a copolymer having a high molecular weight alkali- stable backbone, with intermittent pendant terminal polar groups, the separator being capable of serving as a complete barrier to the passage of zinc ions. The polymer backbone may be of polyethylene, polypropylene or polystyrene and the polar groups may be carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, sulpho, cyano or conjugated, non-aromatic unsaturated groups. A suitable copolymer is ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer. Analytical methods for determining the suitability of separator materials comprise developing an elemental X- ray map of the separator material after it has been subjected to the environment of normally operating secondary alkaline cells for a minimum of 20 full charge and discharge cycles, in order to determine whether zinc ions have passed through the material under these conditions.
