Abstract

PURPOSE: To realize rapid and accurate charge of a zinc alkaline storage battery, and improve the cycle characteristic of the battery by detecting the terminal voltage of the battery, and thereby periodically carrying out charge and discharge until a first standard voltage, which is near the full charged state, is achieved.
CONSTITUTION: An alkaline storage battery 6 containing zinc used as a negative active material is charged with an a.c. power source through a rectifier 7 and a transistor 4. The battery 6 is parallel connected to a discharge circuit consisting of a resistance 8 and a transistor 5. In charging the battery 6, charge and discharge are carried out periodically by use of a timer 2 until the voltage of the battery 6 reaches to the first standard voltage, which is set below an oxygen-gas generating voltage and near the full charged state which is 70∼80% of the capacity of the battery 6. After that, a second standard voltage, which is the voltage of the battery 6 in the full charged and open circuit state, and a third standard voltage, which is the voltage of the battery 6 in the full charged and closed circuit state, are set with a constant voltage circuit 1. Then, charge and discharge as well as a comparing action 3 are performed in the open circuit state at voltage below the second standard voltage, and the charge is completed when the voltage reaches to the third standard voltage.
