Abstract

Methods are disclosed wherein a porous tungsten body to be used in a dispenser cathode is formed and machined to substantially the desired size and shape. The surface of the body which is to serve as the cathode emissive surface is then conditioned by controlled electric discharge machining thereof with discharges between such surface and a nearby tool electrode, of copper and subsequently nickel, having an opposing surface shaped complementary to the desired shape of the cathode emissive surface. Lower cathode work functions and a reduced variation in work function between individual cathodes result.
