Abstract

The tachometer comprises an optoelectronic pulse generator for generating primary pulses whose frequency is proportional to the speed of a machine shaft. In order to convert these pulses to an analogue signal proportional to speed, means 8 are provided for converting the primary pulses into secondary pulses whose width and height remain substantially unaltered as the frequency of the primary pulses is varied, and a filter 12 is provided for generating the analogue signal from the secondary pulses. Preferably also a frequency changer 3 is provided for changing the frequency of the primary pulses when within certain frequency ranges. In one embodiment this frequency change is compensated for by amplifying 11 the secondary pulses by an appropriate factor. In another embodiment the frequency change is compensated for by supplying pulses whose width depends on the frequency change undergone by the corresponding primary pulses. In this manner it is possible to detect a substantially greater speed range than with a conventional electromagnetic tachogenerator. <IMAGE>
