Abstract

Retorts for use in the manufacture of alkali metal cyanides are made with a body portion of nickel-chrome alloy and a thin non-porous lining of iron, steel or other ferrous metal. The lining may be spaced from the body portion by a flange at one end and adjusting screws at the other, so that the two parts can expand independently, and the intervening space is packed with finely divided iron, or a mixture of iron and a reducing-agent such as carbon. Nichrome or alloys containing about 85 per cent of nickel and 10 to 15 per cent of chromium, or 50 to 60 per cent nickel, 10 to 20 per cent chromium and 10 to 30 per cent iron may be used for the body portion of the retort.
