Abstract

CLutches, ratchet.-In power turning-gear wherein a pinion on an electrically or otherwise driven shaft is moved axially to connect it to the engine fly -wheel, the pinion c is formed with clutch parts g, h on each side. Corresponding parts i, j are formed on the shaft b, a spring m keeping the clutch h, j normally closed. On rotation of the shaft owing to its inertia, the pinion moves axially, this movement being completed by the retarding effect of the fly-wheel when the teeth are partly engaged. The turning effort is obtained through the square faces of the clutch parts g, h. When the engine runs faster than the motor can turn it, the pinion is disengaged by the curved parts of the clutch g, h.
