Abstract

4086. Rowley, A. C. July 11, 1914, [Convention date]. Sprinklers, automatic.-In a dry pipe valve for sprinkler systems, the main valve 20 is held closed by an auxiliary valve 115 until the pressure in the outlet compartment 6 is lowered sufficiently to allow the auxiliary valve to be opened by counterweights 92, the main valve then opening. At the same time, the valve 61 closes the port 60 to the auxiliary casing 25. When the inlet valve is closed, it is maintained in position by a bell-crank lever 40 engaging a yoke 35 embracing the valve, as shown, the other end of the push-rod 50 engaging a screwed spindle 68 on the lever 75. This lever is held by a projection 88 on the member 85 carrying the weights 92. The lever 85 is held in the raised and operative position by the air pressure in the outlet 6 acting on the valve 115 through the rod 110 and catch lever 100. When this air pressure is lowered, the counterweights lift the auxiliary valve, releasing at the same time the end of the lever 75, which then rocks about the pins 77 and allows the valve 61 to close and the inlet valve 20 to open under the action of pressure fluid in the inlet port 3. Water enters the chamber 13 and lifts the valve 21, passing then freely into the sprinkler system.
