Abstract

3271. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. March 12, 1914. Mountings.-Relates to elevating-gear for high-angle guns of the kind having a spring for counterbalancing the weight of the gun in front of the trunnions, the spring being fully energized when the gun is horizontal, and gradually de-energized as the gun is elevated. The invention consists in employing a flat-spiral spring acting upon the shaft carrying the elevating- pinions. The Figure shows, in sectional plan, the invention applied to the elevating-gear of a machine-gun mounting comprising a handwheel B<X> arranged concentric with the gun trunnions operating upon pinions b<1> moving over elevating-racks b fixed to the gun carriage. The flat-spiral spring D is fixed at its outer end to a casing D', and at its inner end to the shaft b'X of the elevating-pinions.
