Change-speed gearing. - Variable - speed epicyclic gearing comprises a countershaft f, Fig. 2, carrying a sun-gear b<2> and having a conical portion f<2> acting as a clutch member coacting with an internal conical surface d<1> upon a driven shaft d. An internally toothed ring b is driven by a chain from a sprocket c on the engine shaft. Planet-gears b<3> meshing with the gears b<2>, b are carried by a member b<1> secured to the shaft d. When the shaft f is moved to the right, the surfaces f<2>, d<1> engage, and the gearing turns solid. Movement of the shaft f to the left disengages the clutch, and a brake h<1> is caused to engage and hold a drum h secured to the shaft f. The shaft d is then driven at a reduced speed. The gearing is enclosed in a casing a, Fig. 1, which is secured to the frame tubes of a motor-cycle by a clamp a<1>. The shaft f is moved longitudinally by way of a collar g, shown also in Fig. 5. A lever g<1> engages the collar g and also a collar on a screw g<2> which screws into a fixed part g<3>, Fig. 1, and is turned by a lever g<1>. A partial turn of the screw g<2> operates the lever g<1> to move the shaft f. Further turning causes a cam g<5>, Fig. 5, to operate the expanding brake h<1>. Still further turning releases the brake h<1> to effect a ' free engine ' configuration. A ratchet-mounted pinion i', Fig. 2, coacting with a toothed segment i, is provided for starting the engine. In the arrangment described in the Provisional Specification, the plant-carrier is driven from the engine, and the internally toothed wheel is secured to the driven shaft.
