Road trains; compound or articulated tramcars and railway motor-cars.-In a train of vehicles having a number of driven axles, various means are provided for ensuring that the forward vehicles or axles shall exert a greater tractive effort than those towards the rear of the train, so as to prevent overrunning of the rear vehicles. This may be effected by (1) making the forward wheels of greater diameter than the rear wheels, (2) providing the front part of the train with a greater number of driving-axles, (3) providing faster or more powerful motors on the forward axles or vehicles, (4) providing more motors to drive the forward axles than the rear axles. The rear wheels may, in conjunction with any of these methods, he braked earlier or with greater force than the front wheels.
