Abstract

27,222. Max, E., and Kammerer, F., [Firm of]. Nov. 26. Rolling; working at specified temperatures.- Wire, plates, &c. electroplated with gold, or with an alloy of gold and silver or copper, are rolled under pressure sufficient to consolidate the coating and weld it to the cores while heated to a temperature, say 750-800‹ C., too low to cause the cores to melt or to absorb any of the coating metal. A good coating may 'thus be produced with only 3 or 4 grammes of gold to 1000 grammes of core material. The products form substitutes for the coated articles known as rolled gold. The rolls preferably have bearings and supports of quartz, zirconia, or like glass of low thermal dilatation, to facilitate accurate adjustment of the pressure, which may be from 1000 to 1500 kilogrammes per square decimetre. Rolls for wire may be placed in an oven, and may be arranged to produce successively larger pressures; the axes of different pairs of rolls may be at right-angles to one another.
