Abstract

191,297. Lorkin, W. L., Daglish, E. E., and Swift, H. B. Jan. 31, 1922. Heating by electricity. - An arc-welding generator A has an inductance F wound on a closed magnetic core G arranged as a shunt to a differential series field winding C. The ordinary field winding is supplied from an independent source. During normal working, the diverter F acts as an ohmic resistance in shunt with the series coil C and is so arranged that the normal voltage is produced. When the arc is struck at D, E, the momentary short-circuit causes a heavy current to circulate, but owing to the high inductance of the diverter a larger proportion of the current passes through the differential series coil, rapidly reduces the field and so cuts down the current. The operative amount of the winding F can be varied by means of a switch J.
