Air, supplying; air supply, heating; firebridges.-In a steam-boiler furnace, air for combustion is heated by passing it through a pipe 7 arranged in the side flue and a pipe 4 passing through the steam-and-water space of the boiler, and is delivered through an elongated opening 3 arranged above or in proximity to the fire-bridge. The admission of air to the pipe 7 is controlled by a hinged door or flap 9. If desired, pipes extending through both side flues and communicating with a common outlet 3 may be provided. Air may also be admitted from the ash-pit through a damper-controlled passage to the hollow firebridge 2 from which it escapes through a contracted outlet 11 to the flue.
