STE AM-BOILER FURNACE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAu I'IENTSCIIEL, cltlzen of the United States, residing at Ch1- cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved furnace particularly suitable for steam boilers and provided with means for feeding hot air to the combustion chamber, at the proper place, with any kind of boiler, whereby said air will combine with the smoke and gases and create a perfect combustion of the carbon particles of which the smoke is formed, thereby acting as a smoke consumer.
The object of the invention is to produce an improved furnace of the kind stated, characterized particularly by novelty with respect to the means for feeding hot air across the furnace. Means are also provided for feeding steam to the combustion chamber behind the bridge wall, for the purpose of consuming the smoke, or in case the temperature is too low, for depositing the smoke in the form of soot within the soot chamber.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of a boiler provided with the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fi 1. Fig. 3 is a detail in section on. line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 indicates the fire door, 2 the grate, and A is the wall of the furnace.
In embodying the invention. I provide a special form of pipe, as shown in the drawings extending across the fire box. comprising an air pipe 16 which communicates at its ends with the hot air spaces It in the walls of the furnace. This pipe 16 is surrounded and inclosed by a water pipe 17 to which water is supplied through a pipe 18 leading from the outside. This outside connection is preferable to connecting the water pipe or jacket with the boiler. Steam will be made in the pipe 17, and it is therefore provided with a steam drum 19 which has an outlet pipe 21 leading to the steam jet pipes S, which are used in this construction. The air pipe 16 has jet openings 16 into the tire box, and air is supplied through said openings to the fire box. In addition to supplying the steam for Specification of Letters Patent.

The arrangement shown is also well adapted for use with water tube boilers, be cause there are various objections to connecting the supply pipe 18 for the water jacket to the tubes of a water tube boiler. One is that the boiler would be weakened at the point of connection, and be very liable to leak, and such connections could not be cleaned, as the boiler tubes are, and would therefore soon be obstructed.
\Vhen the furnace door is open, especially for feeding fresh coal into the furnace, the temperature is too low for perfect combustion. By use of a steam pipe or moistener such as shown at S, the smoke or carbon particles which escape combustion will be condensed or weighted so that the draft will not carry the same out, but will cause the same to fall down behind. the bridge wall in the shape of soot, and thus prevent the emission of smoke from the chimney during the process of stoking. At all times the air supplied will assist comlnistion.
The area and location of the air feeding pipe will be properly proportioned to the size of the furnace 1nd located in proper position above the fire box to advantageouslyfeed the air thereto.
l claim:
1. Means for feeding air and steam to a furnace, comprising an air pipe having jet outlets and extending across the fire box, a water jacket iuclosing said air pipe, and a steam pipe leading from said water jacket and discharging into the combustion chamber of the furnace.
'2. Means for feeding air and steam to a furnace comprising an air pipe having jet outlets and extending across the fire box, a water pipe inclosing said air pipe and having a water supply independent of the boiler, a steam drum on the water pipe, and a steam pipe leading from said drum and discharging into a passage for the products of combustion in the furnace.
