Abstract

28,931. Justice, P. M., [North East Electric Go.]. Dec. 16. Gearing varying in ratio as drive is applied to one or other terminal shaft.-Relates to gearing for transmitting power either from a shaft 4 to an alined shaft 9, or from the shaft 9 to the shaft 4 at an automatically-altered speed-ratio. The gearing may be used to connect an internal-combustion engine by way of a gear 24 to a dynamo 26, which may be used as a motor to start the engine. One end 15 of the shaft 4 is expanded and recessed and carries an external ratchet clutch 19, and an internal ratchet clutch 14. The clutch 14 coacts with a member 13 on the shaft 9 and by it the shaft 4 may drive the shaft 9 directly. The clutch 19 coacts with a gear ring 17, which is connected through gears 22, 21 with a pinion 16 fast upon the shaft 9. When the shaft 9 is the driver, the clutch 19 comes into action, and the shaft 4 is driven through the reducing- gearing, the shafts 4, 9 turning always in the same direction. To obviate damage that might be caused by the accidental backward turning of the shaft 4, a connexion which allows slip is provided between the rim of the gear 21 and its web portion 27. A plate 28 adapted to turn with the web 27 is thrust inwards by springs so that an outer conical surface bears against a coacting friction surface 35 on the wheel rim.
