Abstract

17,289. Stevens, H. C. M., and Adams Manufacturing Co. July 25. Gearing varying in ratio as drive is applied to one or other terminal element. - Relates to gearing for transmitting power either from a first shaft to a second, or from the second to the first at a different ratio, the change in ratio being effected automatically on reversing the transmission. The gearing may be used to connect an internal - combustion engine by way of a belt 7 and pulley 6 to the shaft 1 of a dynamo which may be used as a motor to start the engine. The outer ring 4 of an epicyclic train is secured to the pulley 6, and meshes with the outer pinions 13 of pairs of interengaging pinions 12, 13 carried by a disk 16. The inner pinions 12 mesh with a sun gear 3 secured to the shaft 1. When the pulley 6 is the driver, a pawl 11 upon it engages a ratchet-wheel 10 upon the shaft 1 so that the shaft is driven directly, the gearing turning solid. When the shaft 1 is the driver, turning in the same direction, a pawl 17 carried by the disk 16 engages a fixed ratchet-wheel 19. The disk 16 is thus kept from turning backwards while the gearing works to drive the ring 4 forwards. If the pawls 11, 17 are reversed, the shaft 1 will be driven faster than the pulley 6 when driving, while the gearing will turn solid when the shaft 1 is the driver. Gearing may be inserted between the ring 4 and the pawl 11, and the belt 7 may be replaced by other gearing, so as to alter the speed ratios.
