Abstract
24,835. Thompson, W. P., [Bremer & Br³ckmann]. Oct. 30. Bending-dies; shearing-adjuncts; stamping; soldering.-In the manufacture of tubular rings. more especially for use in fastening bottle closures, a strip of metal is bent into a cylinder on a mandrel and then, by the axial displacement of the mandrel, curled against a die. A shear blade 4, Fig. 1, cuts a strip of metal from a plate 1, inclined guides 8 directing the strip into position to be forced by a reciprocating die 5, Figs. 1 and 3, against a mandrel 6. A die 5<1> is then operated and is provided with a recess 11 for forming the lap joint. The mandrel 6 has a shoulder 15, which, on the mandrel being forced downwards, engages the work and forces it into a pair of dies 13, Figs. 1, 3, and 5, to curl the band into tubular form. The rings, .after being formed, drop down one above another on the mandrel, and the lowest ring is retained by springs 17 from which it may be slipped to a bent conveyer 19. A flame 20 may be employed to solder the rings previously supplied with a soldering-substance.
