9804. Dowdell, A. T. April 25. Electro-magnets.-The cores of solenoids energized by alternating or rectified currents are made in three parts placed end to end and joined mechanically, the two outer portions C, D, Fig. 2, being of iron and the middle portion E of non - magnetic material. When the core is moved longitudinally within certain limits, the amount of iron within the solenoid remains constant and the self-induction of the solenoid is practically unaltered. The invention is applicable to other forms of core.
