M a c h i n e c u t t e r s , sharpening in situ. - The knives b of a chaffcntter are sharpened in situ while the machine is in action by rotary grinders e<1> mounted at the ends of arms a pivoted at d to the flywheel arms, and rotated by the contact of wheels f on the grinder shafts with a guide h, which also serves to swing the grinders along t h e knife-edges as the cutter rotates. The guide h is adjustably mounted on the machine frame and is shaped so as to carry the grinder away from the knife as the latter passes through the cutting-arc. Modifications are described in which the grinder arms are guided round the outside of an eccentric disk replacing the guide h, and the grinder is driven by a band or the grinder moves along a guide parallel with the blade edge.
