Abstract

23,292. Yoxall, H. S., and Thorneycroft, C. W. Oct. 23. Expanding pulleys for motor-cycles &c. are operated by stepped cams in such a way as to yield a stepped series of definite speeds, the lateral pressure on the cams being balanced. The belt tends to thrust the pulley flanges 1, 4 apart, so that operating-cams 8, 12 are pressed together between ball bearings 6, 13, Fig. 2. The cam 8 is prevented from turning and allowed to move axially by means 9, 10, Fig. 1. The cam 12 is prevented from moving outwards by a plate 14 and is adapted to be turned by means such as a pair of chains 20. The cams 8, 12 have coacting inclined faces cut up into a series of flat or backwardly-inclined steps 19, which interlock and prevent the cam 12 from turning backwards.
