Abstract

17,889. Lake, W. E., [Cottrell & Sons Co., C. B.]. March 14. Inking-apparatus. - Multi-colour printing- presses, of the kind provided with means for driving the inking-apparatus independently of the means for driving the plate and impression cylinders, and in which the inking-devices are capable of being moved into and out of operative positions, without disconnecting their driving- means, are constructed with frames for supporting the inking-mechanism which are adjustable to and from the plate cylinders, a sliding connexion being provided between the inking- apparatus and a countershaft operated by belt and bevel gearing from the main driving-shaft. As shown applied to a multi-colour press of the kind described in Specification 17,687/11, two sets of inking-apparatus are mounted in a frame 38, which is adjustable relatively to the main frame 1 by means of a pinion 93 and a fixed rack 92, the pinion 93 being operated by a handwheel and fitted with a locking - pawl. Two other sets are mounted in a similar frame 39. The inking-rollers are driven by bevel-gearing 107, 109, 110 from a shaft 24, which is also geared to the printing and impression cylinders. The gear 110 is on a split shaft 111, the ends of the shaft being capable of longitudinal movement with the frames 38, 39 while still rotating. Bevel-gears 114, 120 on these ends are geared to the main ink-distributing rolls, which are fitted with rollers supplying ink to the printing- cylinders, and are themselves supplied with ink from messenger rolls. These messenger rolls coact with ductor rolls, which are driven by worm gearing from shafts 132, 139 driven by gearing from the split ends of shaft 111.
