Carding-engines.-In carding cotton, wool, or similar textile materials, a series of three carding-engines is used, the first of the form shown in Fig. 1, the second a similar engine with a larger winding-drum, and the third as shown in Fig. 3. The main cylinder 2, Fig. 1, is provided with a number of sets of four rollers, each set comprising a worker and stripper such as 10<a>, 10<g>, a cleaner 26<a>, and a comber 25<a>. The material is worked and delivered to the taker-in 4b by feed rollers 1<a>, 1<b>, 1<c>, from which it passes under a burring - cylinder 5a to a breast cylinder 5 provided with workers and strippers 6a, 6, 6<d>, 6<c> and a fancy 7. Cylinders 8, 8<a> transfer the material to the main cylinder 2, and, after passing the sets of four rollers and a fancy 11, it is transferred by the cylinder 5<1>, beneath cylinders 12<a>, 12, 12b, to a doffer 13, from which it passes to a doffer 16, the cylinder 15 effecting the transfer, and the cylinder 14 acting as an auxiliary comber. The fleece is wound on a drum 18 which is in contact with a plain roller 17. The construction of the third carding-engine, Fig. 3, as far as the fancy 11, is similar to the first and second, but the cylinder 5<1> is stripped by ring cylinders 20, 20<1>, and cylinders 21, 21<1>, 22, 22<1> by variation of speed cause the thickening of the strips, which are transferred by suitable means to the rubbers 23, 23<1>. The condensed slivers are wound upon spindles 27. The workers, doffers, and other cylinders may be provided with clothing similar to that used upon fancy rollers.
