Abstract

190,981. Schneider, H. July 20, 1922. Hydraulic and pneumatic transmission apparatus; transmission gear between separate axles; reversing-gearing. - Comprises transmission gear for locomotives driven by oil engines. Fig. 2 shows one construction in which two longitudinally-arranged engines drive the primary members 6 of a pair of nuid-transmission members, the secondary members 7 of which are connected together and to the externally-toothed casing 10. The casing transmits the drive through pinions 11 to longitudinal shafts 12 geared by bevel or worm gear to the shaft of each driving-wheel. Fig. 5 shows another construction providing for change-speed and reversing. A single, preferably non-reversible motor, is used in conjunction with two fluid-pressure transmission members 110, 120, either of which can be rendered operative or run idle at will, by admitting or discharging nuid to or from its interior. For slow speed forward running, the member 120 is operative, and 110 idle. The shaft 130 is driven in this case through a spur train and the shaft-coupling clutch 135, part of the power being re-transmitted through the spur gear of the idle transmission member to the longitudinal shaft 140 on the opposite side of the vehicle. To reverse, the coupling crutch 145 is connected and 135 disconnected. The shaft 140 then is driven through a reversing spur train from the member 120, part of the power being retransmitted to the shaft 130. For high-speed for. ward driving the member 110 is made operative and 120 idle. Both longitudinal shafts then are driven from the member 110. The use of a reversible oil-engine which would allow certain of the gear trains in Fig. 5 to be omitted is referred to. The making use of the reversing-gear to serve as a third slow speed forward drive, by reversing the engine, also is described. By rendering both fluid transmission gears operative at the same time and manipulating the two couplings so that the transmission gears rotate in opposite directions, a braking effect can be obtained. In some cases one end only of each wheel axle may be driven.
