Abstract

6900. McKeen, W. R. March 22. Clutches; toothed gearing. -Relates to clutch and two - speed gearing for transmitting power from the motor to the driving-axle of railway or like motor-cars. Fig. 3 shows a sectional elevation of the axle 11. The engine crank-shaft drives through chain gearing a sprocket-wheel 27 mounted upon the axle 11 and connected thereto through a friction clutch and two-speed gearing. The sprocket-wheel 27 is loosely mounted upon, and may be connected by a clutch to the sleeve 30 which is loose upon the axle 11, and may drive it at either of two speeds. The clutch comprises a carrier 31 secured'to the sprocket-wheel, and provided with an inwardly-directed flange 32 adapted to be gripped between clutch members 33, 34 of which the member 33 is keyed to the sleeve 30. The two clutch members are drawn together by means of bolts 35 and levers 39, the latter being, operated from a sliding sleeve 41, and pressing the clutch member 34 away from a collar 37 on the bolt by a toggle action. The sleeve 30 drives the axle 11 through two-speed clutch toothed gearing in which the member 66 locks either of the toothed wheels 54, 63 to the axle, the wheel 54 being keyed to the sleeve 30, and the wheel 63 driven from the wheel 54 through a countershaft. The countershaft and the operating means for the clutch and speed gear are carried by a frame 47 loosely mounted upon the sleeve and axle, and further spring-supported from a crossmember of the truck frame. The sleeve 41 and the clutch member 66 are operated through pivoted levers 45, 69 by hand or fluid pressure acting in cylinders 52, 72, as described in Specification No. 6898, A D. 1906.
