Abstract

25,283. Dolter, H., and Mertens, G. Dec. 6, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Brakes.-A band brake is applied by an electromagnet or electro-magnets connected directly to the ends of the band. In one arrangement, shown in Fig. 1, the two arms S<1>, S<2> of a horse-shoe electromagnet connected to the band are pivoted at a, and their motion is limited by stops A, B. If the brake wheel is rotating in the direction of the arrow, and a current is sent through the coils of the magnet, the band is tightened, and the arm S<1> is dragged against the stop A. If the wheel is rotating in the opposite direction, the stop B comes into use. In another arrangement, shown in Fig. 2, two magnets M', M<2> are used and the magnetic circuit is completed through the brake wheel. In this case the frictional drag of one of the magnets tightens the band. In a modification, shown in Fig. 3, and described in the Specification in the original form as published under the Patents Act, 1901, a single bell-shaped magnet connected to the band by hooks is used, and fixed hooks Z<1>, Z' are arranged to act as stops on the ends of the band. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
