Abstract

803,824. Electric motor driving arrangements. STEPHAN, S., [trading as STEPHAN UND SOHNE, A.]. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 9, 1954], No. 31637/55. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXIV] In an electromagnetically released band brake particularly for electric motors, the brake band comprises a split outwardly sprung ring having ends so mounted that each end is free to move towards the other and in the opposite direction against an abutment whereby on braking the band is tightened in either direction of rotation. . In the embodiment illustrated a brake pulley b, provided with spokes c which produce an air flow through the pulley to cool the braking surfaces and the motor, is mounted on the armature shaft a of an electric motor and is adapted to be braked, when the electromagnet q ceases to be energized, by a brake band d in the form of a split outwardly sprung ring, the inner side of which carries a brake lining e. Adjustable springs i and linkage o, m, k act on levers h to force abutment shoulders f on each end of the brake band towards each other to apply the brake. Depending upon the direction of rotation of the brake pulley b, the appropriate shoulder f is urged against the corresponding lever h whilst the other shoulder f is carried forward with the pulley. The magnet may be connected in series with the motor for producing a large initial force on being switched on and may be connected in parallel with the motor for producing a sufficient holding force.
