Abstract

11,880. Albion Motor Car Co., and Murray, T. B. May 25. Magneto-electric machines; armatures; field magnets; inductors for stationary armatures and field magnets.-A magneto-electric generator of the inductor type, particularly adapted for igniting in internal-combustion engines having one or more cylinders, is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The laminated armature core A carrying the spool C for the windings B is fixed in a non-magnetic casting D, to which are bolted the laminated pole-pieces E, F of a permanent magnet or electromagnet G. The rotor consists of a spider or drum H having secured at its periphery two sets of laminated arcshaped inductors J, K of soft iron, Fig. 4, which are preferably oppositely disposed on the two faces, so that, when an inductor J of one set magnetically connects the pole-piece E with one limb of the armature A, an inductor K of the other set conveys the magnetic flux from the armature back to the pole-piece F, and vice versÔ. The number of alternations per revolution will thus equal the number of inductors in each set. The armature core and the pole-pieces E, F may be laminated in the same direction as the inductors, for which purpose they may be built up of laminµ of rectangular horse-shoe form. A magnetoelectric generator is described having two inductors only in each set, the pole-pieces E, F being set at an angle of slightly less than 180‹ apart with the armature midway between them. One or more of the inductors may be replaced by non-magnetic balance weights, or each set may be arranged upon a separate spider, or both sets may be similarly disposed at the two ends of the rotor, in which case the field-magnet poles and armature are positioned so as to achieve the desired result.
