Abstract

190,392. Redmond, J., and Redmond, J. Feb. 24, 1922. Sliding bolts; door chains and the like.-In a fastener for sliding, hinged, and pivoted windows and doors which can only be released from the inside when the windows or doors are closed and enables the. window or door to be partially opened for ventilation, a headed bolt with side wings cooperates with a rack having a longitudinal slot with transverse side notches. The Figures show the device applied to sliding windows. The bolt 17 is square and fits into a squared part of the casing 13. The squared part 17 ends in a disclike head 16 behind which are a pair of ear-pieces 18. A sleeve 15 is rotatably mounted on the bolt and has a slot 19 with side recesses 20, 21, which co-operate with a pin 22 on the casing to hold the bolt in its shot or withdrawn position. The sleeve 15 is turned by a knob to bring the pin 22 into the slot 19 and the bolt is pushed in so that the head 16 of the bolt enters the circular hole 9 in the rack-plate 6. The engagement of the ears 18 with the sides of the hole 9 prevent the window sashes from being moved apart for opening. If the bolt is pushed in a little further, an extension of the slot 19 allowing of this, the ears 18 clear the plate 6 and the sashes can be parted, the bolt shank 17 moving up the slot 10 in the rack plate 6. By pulling back the bolt until the ears 18 engage pairs of recesses 11 in the slot 10 of the rack-plate and turning the sleeve 15 to engage the notch 21 with the pin 22, the sashes can be locked in the partially-open position, and cannot be unlocked for complete opening until first closed to bring the head 16 opposite the hole 9 in the rack-plate.
