Shaft couplings; securing toothed wheels on skafts.-Relates to spring drives in which damping-means are provided, and consists in a set of elements having the combined function of damping oscillations by sliding-friction and of transmitting the load to the springs. As applied to securing a toothed rim to a shaft, Fig. 5, alternate annular discs p<1>, p<2> are slidable on castellations d, q, Fig. 2, respectively on a hub or. boss b<1>, between pinions b<2> and on the rim f<1> which bears on rings f<2> bolted to plates e<1> scoured to the hub. The space between the plates e<1> may be wholly occupied by the discs, or, as shown, a flange g<2> of the rim f<1> may extend into it. Springs n<1> acting through caps l<2> adjustable by nuts m<3> on bolts m<2> press the discs together, the flange g<2> and discs p<2> being slotted to allow movement of the bolts. When the flange g<2> is not provided, the bolts may be dispensed with, and the caps l<2>, fitted with lock-nuts or set-screws. may screw directly in one of the plates e<1> or into housings therein, the springs then pressing the discs against the other plate e'. A floating presser-ring may be provided. In another modification, a single spring encircling the shaft and housed in a casing is employed. One or more tangential springs t are arranged in each of the spaces s formed by normally-aligned slots in the members p<1>, p<2>, g<2>, and bear on pads u, Fig. 2. When the load is sufficient to cause slip, the springs are compressed, synchronous and other oscillations being damped by the discs. As applied to a shaft coupling, the hub b<1> is replaced by a castellated sleeve keyed to one shaft, and the rim f<1> by a casing bolted to a flange on the other shaft and bearing by antifriction bushes on the sleeve. A stuffing-box may be arranged between the sleeve and casing to prevent leakage of lubricating-oil.
