Abstract

Axle distance members. -Relates to suspension devices for motor vehicles in which the axle is connected to the chassis in such a manner as to prevent relative transverse movement between the axle and chassis but to permit each wheel freely and substantially independently to follow road irregularities without subjecting the connections to torsional stresses. A swivelling device is provided in connection with each wheel to enable it to swivel about a shaft arranged in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and forming part of a frame positively connecting the wheel axle to the chassis. As shown, the end of the front axle 5 near the wheel 2 carries a rotatable bearing 8, Fig. 3, to which is pivoted, by a vertical bolt 9, a fork 10 having a shaft 11 rotatably mounted in a socket 14 of a rod 15 connected by a universal joint 16, 17, Fig. 2, to a transverse shaft 18 mounted on the chassis 7. The end of the axle 5 near the wheel 1 is formed with a rigid eye 26, Fig. 5, which is connected by a bolt 9, fork 10, and shaft 11 to a socket 14, as described with reference to Fig. 3, the socket 14 being carried by a two-armed stay 19, 20 hinged to the shaft 18. A similar arrangement is used in connection with the rear axle but the positions of the rod 15 and forked stay 19, 20 are reversed.
