Abstract
179,107. Imray, O. Y., (Timken-Detroit Axle Co.). Aug. 10, 1921. Axles and axle structures.-The shaft 5 driving the differential gear through bevel-gearing is carried by a support 6 which is so secured to the rear-axle housing 7 that the mesh of the bevelgearing can be adjusted. The support 6 fits within an opening in the housing and is secured to the housing by bolts 17. A ring-nut 16 screws on the support and bears against the face of the housing, so that by slackening the bolts 17 and rotating the nut, the shaft 5 and its bevel pinion 4 can be adjusted relatively to the bevel wheel 3 and the housing. The inner end of the support 6 fits within a seat formed by a web 9 of the housing. The outer roller bearing 11 of the shaft 5 is adjusted by means of a sleeve 13, which screws into the support 6 and is locked by a catch 14.
