Abstract

Screw and like propellers.-Propellers for aircraft are constructed with a number of blades of aerofoil section set close together, the rear upper surface of each blade being turned up to direct the air current on to the convex upper surface at the front of the next blade. The undersurfaces are flat or slightly concave and their chords are horizontal. Fig. 2 shows blades 7 set by means of tongues 8 in concentric rings 4 supported by spokes 5 and wire bracing 6 from discs on a central sleeve. The hub is covered to the outer ring 4, which has a radius greater than the length of the blades 7. The blades 7 are inclined radially towards the direction of thrust, and the outer edges are clamped between two rings 10 with interposed filling-pieces.
