Abstract

162,513. Johnson, R. D. April 1, 1920. Sinking, preventing. - A method of adding to the buoyancy of sound or damaged ships consists of forming masses of ice within or around the vessel. The ice is produced by a freezing agent, such as liquid air, acting on water in suitable containers which may be of canvas applied at any suitable points outside the vessel. The liquid air is allowed to bubble up through the water, and in this way masses of ice of cellular structure are formed. The containers may be of rigid mate rial and adapted to be attached to the shell of the vessel by electromagnets.
