Disc and like mills.-In grinding- mills of the open-pan type as employed in grinding flint, china-stone, and other minerals and materials, a pillar c fixed in the centre of the pan a supports a wheel d the arms e of which carry blocks g of wood or other suitable material and the wheel is driven from its circumference by bevel, spur, belt, rope, chain or other gearing. As shown, bevel teeth m around the lower edge of the rim of the wheel d gear with a bevel-wheel n on a driving-shaft o. Ball or roller bearings j, k are arranged between the boss f of the wheel and the pillar c. The bottom of the pan is paved with stones b, and the sides are constructed of or lined with stone b<2>, porcelain, wood, metal, cement, &c. Metal straps h or other suitable fastenings secure the blocks g to the arms e, and each block is provided with a metal plate g' arranged to clear the paving-stones b. The blocks or impellers g drive round the top stones or runners which are loose in the pan. Fig. 3 shows plant arranged for extracting the rough particles from the finest. Two pans a are arranged side by side with their wheels d driven by bevel-wheels o<1> on a countershaft o<2>. The ground material is discharged through passages t<2> into collecting-chambers s and is pumped or raised by other suitable means into a wash-tub, sifter, or other apparatus u capable of separating the thoroughly ground from the rough material. The fine material passes to receptacles v, while the rough material is returned to the pans a for further grinding. The water &c. is run off from the receptacles v into a tank w and is available for re-use either in the pans a or in the separator u. The receptacles v are arranged at such a height as to enable the finished material to be loaded by gravity into barrels or other receptacles y.
