Abstract

160,668. Napier & Son, Ltd., D., and Tryon, H. C. March 26, 1920. Pistons.-An internal-combustion engine piston is recessed to receive a crescent-shaped piece E, pressed bv radial springs F against that side of the cylinder which takes the thrust on the compression stroke. The piston skirt is cut away from a point below the packing- rings to the end of the skirt, so as to leave projecting strips B, at opposite sides of the gudgeon pin, which are a sliding fit in the cylinder. The piece E is preferably arranged between the packing-rings and the gudgeon-pin bosses C, but a second piece E may be arranged between the gudgeon-pin bosses and the end of the skirt. The springs F are contained in casings G, formed with retaining-collars, and inserted in holes in the thickened bottom of the recess for the piece E. The latter carries at its middle a casing H which telescopes into the corresponding casing G, while the side springs F engage pins J.
