Actuating-mechanism. - In compound screwmechanism for use in emergency stop-valves, sluice-valves, &c., and in which a non-rotatable screwed spindle co-operates with an internally and externally threaded nut operable by a handwheel to coact with a threaded boss on a bridgemember, the spindle 1 is held against rotation by the engagement of a notched collar 7 thereon with guide-ways on the bridge-member 5. The hand-wheel 8 drives the nut 2 either directly by a key or through feathers 10 carried in the wheelboss 9, which is then prevented from lifting by the engagement in a groove thereon of cod-pieces secured to the screwed boss 4. Oil-holes are provided for the cod-pieces, and an oil-hole 13 for lubrication of the spindle 1. An index 15 may be mounted on the collar 7 to co-operate with a scale 18 on one leg of the bridge-piece 5. The threads on the nut may have different pitches and may be of the same or of opposite hand to produce differential or aggregate motion of the spindle.
