Description
N (54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO CONTAINERS
(71) We, AB AKERLUND & RAUS
ING, a Swedish Company of Fack S-221 01
Lund 1, Sweden, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to containers, a method of erecting said containers, and blanks for erection into said containers.
It is known to provide a container having side walls bordering against an open face of the container, pairs of adjacent side-walls being interconnected by gusset panels folded outwardly to lie against one of the pair of side walls. Each of the side-walls of each pair of adjacent side-walls has an edge flange bordering the open face of the package and protruding outwardly of the package, and the edge flanges of adjacent pairs of side-walls are sealed together at the corners. Containers of this kind, internally lined with aluminium foil, have been used as baking trays which are directly usable in a domestic oven. Thus, such a tray can contain a so-called baking mix of dry powder form, and the only thing the consumer has to do after having removed the cover of the tray is to add water and thereafter insert the tray and the contents thereof directly ino the oven.Clearly these trays should be well sealed and the corners of the tray adjacent to the open face are important from this point of view. This requirement is even more important when the tray is lined with aluminium foil or like difficultly sealable material.
In addition to this sealing requirement, it is also required that these baking trays can be easily opened after the baking has been completed. Preferably, it should be possible to unfold the side-walls by means of a simple hand grip without spoiling the baked product.
According to the present invention there is provided a container having side-walls bordering against an open face of the container, at least one pair of adjacent side-walls being interconnected by gusset panels folded outwardly to lie against one of the pair of sidewalls, each of the said pair of side-walls and said gusset panels having a respective outwardly protruding edge flange, wherein the edge flange of the said one side-wall against which the gusset panels are folded has an extended portion which passes below the edge flange of the other side-wall and wherein the edge flanges of the gusset panels are positioned below and form an abutment for the edge flange of the said one side-wall.
Preferably the edge flange of the other of the said pair of side-walls also has an extended portion, said extended portion of said other side-wall passing over said extended portion of said one side-wall. Preferably the extended portion of each edge flange extends along the longitudinal direction of that edge flange.
Conveniently the said gusset panels consist of two panels doubled one upon the other and the edge flanges thereof have portions cut away subjacent the flange extension of the said one side-wall to allow the flange extension of said one side-wall to be bent downwardly during erection of the container to be positioned below the edge flange of the said other side-wall.
In some preferred arrangements, the gusset panels are fastened to the said one side-wall only by a seal between the said one side-wall and the adjacent gusset panel edge flange.
The invention finds particular application where the container is formed from a blank having the whole surface of one side thereof laminated with aluminium foil or like difficulty sealable material to form a lining. Conveniently the container may be formed from a blank having one surface thereof defined by a layer of polythene or like synthetic plastics material to form an outer layer.
Furthermore there is provided in accordance with the present invention a method of forming a container of the invention from a blank having at least one pair of side-wall panels, interconnected by gusset panels, and respective edge flanges on said side-walls and gusset panels, said method comprising erecting said side-wall panels to form a pair of adjacent side-walls bordering an open face of said container, folding said gusset panels outwardly to lie against one of said side-walls, bending outwardly of said container the said edge flanges whereby the gusset panel edge flanges are positioned below and form an abutment for the edge flange of the said one side-wall, and passing beneath the edge flange of the other of said pair of side-walls an extended portion of the edge flange of the said one side-wall.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a previously known container tray which has been used as a baking tray;
Figure 2 is a partial section along a line 11-11 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a tray comprising a container embodying the present invention;
Figure 4 is a partial section along line IV-IV in Figure 3;
Figure 5 schematically shows the folding of a comer or joint flap;
Figure 6 is a schematic partial perspective view of a corner of the tray in Figure 3 seen from below; and
Figure 7 shows a blank for the tray shown in Figure 3.
There will first be described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 a previously known container in the form of a tray. (The previously known tray of Figures 1 and 2 is made from
a blank which has a shape generally similar
to the blank shown in Figure 7, which will be
described in more detail hereinafter, except
that the blank shown in Figure 7 embodies
the present invention in relation to flanges of the blank).
The tray in Figure 1 is of substantially
rectangular box form having a bottom panel
10', opposed longitudinal wall panels 11',
opposed transverse wall panels 12', and gusset
panels 13' of triangular shape. The walls 11' have outwardly folded edge flanges 14' and
the walls 12' have similar edge flanges 15'.
As shown in Figure 1, the edge flanges 15'
have longitudinal extensions 23' which are
located above corresponding extensions 24'
of the flanges 14' without any direct locking
between said flanges in the corner regions of
the tray. The flanges 15' are merely sealed
against the flanges of the gusset panels 13'
located therebelow as indicated by the broken
lines 16' in Figure 1. The flange of the gusset
panel 13' against which this sealing is obtained
is the flange that projects from a panel 17'
of the gusset panel 13' in Figure 2. The panel
18' also has a flange, but this is not sealed
against the underside of the flange of panel
17' due to the immediate presence of the
aluminium foil lining 19' of the tray.In this
last respect, it is to be noted that the tray
consists of an intermediate carton layer 20', the aluminium foil lining layer 19' and an external sealable layer 21' of polythene or other suitable material.
Due to the fact that there is no interlocking between the flanges 14' and 15' in the corner regions of the tray, this corner construction assumes a bellows-like configuration as shown in Figure 2 and the sub-panels 17' and 18' can open to form an air-gap. A minor force in the direction of the arrow 22' in Figure 2 can increase this air-gap and separate the ends 23' and 24' of the flanges 14' and 15' whereby the seal is lost in the corner that is formed by such ends.
In accordance with a construction embodying the present invention it has been realised that this sealing difficulty can be avoided in simple manner by rearrangement of various flanges as shown in Figures 3 to 7. In these further figures reference numerals corresponding to the numerals in Figures 1 and 2 have been used, but the prime signs have been omitted.
The side of the blank shown in Figure 7 is the side which will become the inside of the tray when erected, and this side is entirely faced with the aluminium foil lining 19 as shown in Figure 4. The various panels of the blank are delimited from each other by bending lines as shown in Figure 7. The gusset panels 13 are formed by the flanged panels 17 and 18. In Figure 7 the bending lines between each transverse wall panel 12 and the respective gusset panels 13 are denoted by a special reference numeral 27 to simplify the understanding of Figures 5 and 6.
As is the case with the known tray of Figures 1 and 2, the edge flanges 14 and 15 of the tray of Figures 3 to 7 are longitudinally extended by protruding portions 24 and 23.
However, in contrast to the tray of Figures 1 and 2, the portions 24 and 23 are used to lock the corners of the tray against the bellowslike displacement shown in Figure 2. For the purpose the extending portion 23 of the flange 15 is passed below the extended portion 24 of the flange 14. In order to facilitate this, the flange 25 of panel 17 is formed with a notch or cut-out 28 in its free end. Also, the flange 26 of panel 18 is formed with a taper at its free end. These particular formations 28 and 29 are not essential, but can be varied.
For instance the notch 28 can be replaced by a slot by shaping the end of the flange 25 as shown in broken lines 30. In this connection, the only important point is that it should be possible to press down the extension 23 of the flange 15 below the extension 24 of the flange 14 during erection of the carton blank by machine.
Figure 5 shows a partial stage in the erection of the tray. At the corner shown, the gusset panels are folded with the panel 17 against the transverse wall 12 in the manner indicated. After this folding has been completed or simultaneously with this folding, the flanges 13 and 14 are also bent down from the plane of the respective sides 12 and 11.
Thus initially the extended portion 23 of the flange 15 is located in the plane of the transverse wall 12 and the fold line 27. In order to get into a position below the extended portion 24 of the edge flange 14, the portion 23 firstly has to be displaced a distance corresponding to the total thickness of the gusset panels 17 and 18, and thereafter past the outermost end of the extended portion 24.
Then the transverse wall 12 is pressed against the gusset panels 13 so that the bellows configuration of Figure 2 is avoided. Instead, the flaps 17 and 18 are locked in the manner shown in Figure 4.
However, it should be noted that the gusset panels 13 can be sealed against the transverse wall 12 in the same way as in Figure 1 by a sealing at 16 between the polythene layers of the edge flange 15 and the gusset flange 25. Also, as with the tray of Figures 1 and 2, it is easy to unfold the flaps of the tray simply by inserting a finger between the panel 17 and the transverse wall 12.
In the result, the fact that the flanges 25 and 26 of the gusset panels form abutments for the edge flanges 15 and, at the same time, that the notches and tapers formed therein allow location of the extension 23 below the extension 24 of the edge flange 14, the difficulty of the known baking tray discussed above is reduced or avoided. Basically, the erecting procedure is the same as the known tray, except that fingers or other members have to be arranged to press down the portions 23 below the corresponding portions 24.
However, this does not give rise to any difficulties.
It will be noted that the aluminium foil lining extends over the edge flanges, but it is still possible to seal the tray with a cover engaging flanges by coating the cover with a material such as "SURLYN" (Registered
Trade Mark) or the like which can be sealed against aluminium foil.
While the invention has been described with more particular reference to a specific practical application, it is not intended to be limited thereby but can be varied within the scope of the appended claims.
