Abstract

Link-motions and linkage gears.-Locomotives with three or four cylinders are provided with two primary valve-gears, and the other valve or valves are worked by these in combination through linkage mechanism in such a way as to permit any desired arrangement of cranks. The outside cranks C<1>, C', Fig. 1, are arranged at 90‹ to one another, and at 135‹ to the adjacent cranks C<2>, C<3>. The valves of the outside cylinders c<1>, c<4> are worked by two Walschaert gears, and the valves of the cylinders c<2>, c<3> are worked from these by links a<1>, l<1>, d, l, levers a, e, with fixed pivots a<2>, e<1>, and a floating lever c with a sliding pivot b<2>. A modification of this construction is described wherein two floating levers are used. In the three-cylinder engine shown in Fig. 6, the valve of the cylinder c<2> is operated by a bellcrank a mounted, by means of a slidable fulcrum, on a lever b connected to the gear of cylinder c<1>, and oscillated, through links e, and bell-crank d, by the gear of cylinder c<3>. Modifications are described wherein the bell-crank is provided with a third arm which actuates a fourth valve either directly, or through a rocking lever.
