Abstract

156,084. Ravier, L. Dec. 24, 1919, [Convention date]. Locking nuts.-A nut-loch comprises a nut, a counter-nut or ring engaging the nut and a split conical ring engaging a conical recess in the counter-nut. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the nut 5 has a screwed outer part and a split conical portion. A nut 6 screws on to the nut 5 and has a conical part to engage the split cone and compress it upon the bolt 1. A split conical ring is screwed upon the bolt into engagement with a conical recess in the nut 6. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the conical portion on the nut 5 is dispensed with and a conical split ring 7 is forced into engagement with the bolt by a cone surface on the nut 6. A split spring washer may be arranged between the nuts 5, 6. In another construction, Fig. 8, a split and slit conical projection or ring over the nut 5 is engaged by a conical recess in the nut 6 which screws upon the bolt or upon the nut 5, and a conical split cone engages a corresponding recess in the top of the nut 6. In other forms, the nut 6 is split and provided with a depending cone which is wedged between the wall of a recess in the nut 5 and a split conical ring on the bolt; or the nut 6, in place of engaging the bolt, may screw into the recess in the nut 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 14, each nut 5, 6 has two slits 35, 36 and 37, 38 and the meeting faces of the nuts may be plain or coned. One such nut may be employed in connection with an ordinary nut and locked bv means of a split conical ring engaging a conical recess in the slitted nut. In place of slits, the locking nut may be provided with a resilient spiral extension 39, Fig. 16, and may be employed either as nut or oounternut or both; when employed as a counternut, it has a conical recess to receive the split conical ring. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises a number of other constructions. In the form shown in Fig. 20 (Cancelled), the nut 6 screws upon the nut 5 and has a conical part to engage the slotted and slitted conical end of the nut 5 and also has its end slotted, slit and coned to engage a conical recess in the base of the nut 5. Fig. 26 (Cancelled) shows a form in which a slotted and slitted cone arranged on top of the nut 5 has a screw engagement with the nut 6, a conical part on the nut 6 engaging and compressing the cone on the bolt. Two split conical rings reversely arranged may be engaged by the nuts 5 and 6 respectively, these nuts being screwed one on the other. In the construction shown in Fig. 30 (Cancelled), the nut 6 engages both the bolt 1 and the nut 5 and has a split conical portion adapted to enter a conical recess in the nut 5. In a modification the male cone is formed on the nut 5 and the recess in the nut 6. Both nuts 5 and 6 may screw upon the bolt only and a split cone on one nut engage a recess in the other nut. As shown in Fig. 34 (Cancelled), nuts 5 and 6 are identical in form and each has a conical part 10 provided with a slit 11. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
