Abstract

155,771. Farnsworth, W. W. May 5, 1919, [Convention date]. Vacuum cleaning-apparatus. - In pneumatic carpet cleaners of the kind which are moved over the surface to be cleaned and have a nozzle and a fan whereby air is withdrawn from the surface to be cleaned and passed into a dust-separator and is then discharged against the surface, the nozzle 13, Fig. 3, is formed with a narrow slot 16 which is closed by the surface being cleaned. and is divided into two passages, one of which 19 communicates with the pressure side of the fan and has an outlet adjacent to the nozzle-slot whilst the other passage 20 communicates with the suction side of the fan and has an inlet also adjacent to the nozzle-slot. The nozzle is detachably secured to the fan chamber 10 by clips 14, 15, and the passages in it are formed by means of a partition 18, the lower surface 23 of which terminates above the nozzle-mouth. The outlet passage is formed with an inclined lip 33 which directs the air against the surface being cleaned. and the pressure of the air in the nozzle may be regulated by a valve 35 fitted upon the nozzleface. The dust-separator comprises an outer cover 29, Figs. 1 and 6, which is impervious to the air, and an inner fabric bag 31 having an inlet tube 32 which communicates with the suction passage of the nozzle. The dust-separator communicates through the outlet 30 with the pressure passage of the nozzle, and the inner bag is provided with an outlet 37 which is closed by a clip 38.
